This lesson teaches students who is and how to become a U.S. citizen. It also teaches the obligations and responsibilities of citizenship as well as the process of naturalization. Students will learn how the original Constitution did not define citizenship and how the 14th Amendment defined who was a citizen. Students will learn about the Law of Blood & Law of Soil in determining "natural born citizens." They will also learn the individual steps of naturalization. This lesson includes:

Currently students have to pass a civics state exam in order to graduate in Idaho, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona, North Dakota, Louisiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah – as well as state social studies tests such as Texas’ STAAR exam, as well as Virginia’s Civics SOL exam. These videos look at all of the civics benchmarks that will be tested on most state civics exams.
