Description

Chuck Close was a fantastic post-contemporary artist whose style morphed and evolved over his lifetime. This artist study includes a slide presentation, a packet with informational text and ELA activities, a full portrait demo tutorial video, and a planning worksheet. Student and teacher examples are included as well.

Included is:

  • slide presentation on realism and abstraction with famous examples for each genre, as well as a look at Chuck Close's works (PDF and PPT formats)
  • four-page packet on the artist Chuck Close, text designed from reliable sources, tailored to upper-elementary/middle school reading levels -- two-page reading including a biography of Close, detailing his struggles in life and his evolution of art -- vocabulary within the text that challenge students to decode based on context clues -- critical thinking questions for students to respond using complete sentences (questions include defining words, explaining both realistic and abstract art, and sequencing events) -- vocabulary context clues, decoding activity
  • project planning worksheet for students to choose colors and practice techniques for portrait
  • 9-minute full demo video of project from start to finish
  • finished examples from students and teacher

This is a great example of how to incorporate cross-curricular activities in art class and meet the CCSS.
