What educators are saying

I really liked this for my students so they can better see how meiosis has an effect on chromosomes. This was a really nice resource for a longer class period!
Clear and concise information. Can be used as a reading assignment, perfect for a sub, also could be used as a review.

Description

My students often fail to make broad connections between meiosis and genetics, so I created this in an effort to really break these ideas down. These 5 pages outline what a chromosome is, how genes and their specific alleles are inherited, how variation is created between siblings via crossing over and independent assortment, how traits are expressed and what happens when things go wrong (nondisjunction).

You can assign this as homework, go over it as a whole class, or have students work with partners. It also serves as a great review.

I have uploaded this in a .pptx and PDF format, so you can modify and differentiate for your classroom and students' needs. Enjoy!

NGSS HS-LS3-2 Make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from: (1) new genetic combinations through meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication, and/or (3) mutations caused by environmental factors.

NGSS HS-LS3-3 Apply concepts of statistics and probability to explain the variation and distribution of expressed traits in a population

NGSSHS-LS3-1
Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring. Assessment does not include the phases of meiosis or the biochemical mechanism of specific steps in the process.
NGSSHS-LS3-2
Make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from (1) new genetic combinations through meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication, and/or (3) mutations caused by environmental factors. Emphasis is on using data to support arguments for the way variation occurs. Assessment does not include the phases of meiosis or the biochemical mechanism of specific steps in the process.
