Christopher Columbus or Indigenous Peoples Day Activity

This social studies teaching lesson includes three activities to enhance your Christopher Columbus, National Indigenous Peoples Day, or a unit on European explorers. Activities use the picture books, Encounter by Jane Yolen to teach students the treatment of the Native American Taino tribe by the explorers.

Students will:

• Learn an alternate point of view about Christopher Columbus based on the Taino people
• Enhance higher-level learning skills of foreshadowing, making inferences, and determining the author's purpose
• Demonstrate their ability to compare and contrast, identify figurative language, and write a summary

How to use this activity in your classroom:

Complete the Before Reading activity prior to introducing the book to your students. This will help to gauge student understanding of Christopher Columbus. You can revisit this part of the activity at the end of the activity.

Read the picture book, Encounter to your students. The illustrations from the book are beautiful and also help students to foreshadow upcoming events in the book.

After reading the book, students can complete the various activities. Choose to complete them all or pick ones that fit your classroom needs. For example, students can complete a graphic organizer, comprehension questions about the author's purpose, foreshadowing, and higher-level thinking questions, or complete the flipbook to decorate your classroom for Indigenous Peoples Day.
