Christmas Activities Packet Description
Authors write to give information, present a point of view (persuade), or to entertain. The article, Reindeer or Caribou?, is informational. The poem, Our Once a Year Tree, is meant to be entertaining. This packet was written with third grade common core objectives in mind. However, it is applicable and adaptable for grades 2-5. Since all grades have different ability levels even within each classroom, you would be the best judge of whether the activities are suitable for your students. Partner work or even whole group work is always an option.
The packet contains literacy, math, writing, and speaking and listening activities. The table of contents in the teacher’s section lists specific activities and the related common core objectives. It is a great tool for writing lesson plans. The packet also includes answer keys when applicable.
The cards in the packet can be used for small group work, matching at a center, concentration game between students, or for a group vocabulary exercise. In the group situation, each student receives a card in random order. Students mingle with each other, comparing cards until they find the matching card. Then, each pair stands back to back to show that they have completed the search. Teacher checks or students read their pair of cards aloud depending on the time constraints.
These activities can be used as a booklet or you may wish to pick and choose from the activities provided to use on various days. The packet might also be considered as an emergency substitute plan since it covers reading, writing, math, and some art work. Combined with seasonal books and songs, these activities provide a fun way for students to become more comfortable and proficient with common core standards, while still having fun and celebrating Christmas.
