What educators are saying

This was a very engaging task for my students. It fit in as a nice review for the time of year and they had fun making it and being creative.
We used this activity as an introduction to the quadrilateral hierarchy. It was a great way to introduce key terms and use the shapes and then build upon the attributes of the shapes.

Description

Christmas Math Quadrilateral Nutcracker: Looking for an art + math lesson for the holidays? Use my easy Quadrilateral Nutcracker lesson to teach or reinforce quadrilaterals. Included are a fun art project, quadrilateral train yard (subsets), visual handout, and higher-level thinking worksheets.

The nutcracker is made up of parts made only from members of the quadrilateral family--squares, rectangles, parallelograms, rhombuses, and trapezoids.

I have included all of the colored examples you need to show your students what the finished product will look like. I have included all of the quadrilateral shape templates needed to create the nutcracker, as well as a creative twist on vocabulary cards. I have included six 8.5" x 11" vocabulary posters that you can print and laminate to display in your room. Take a look at the preview to see exactly what you get in this unit.

I was just recently doing this lesson with my students, and one boy said, "This is the coolest project I've ever done!"

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
