Description

Celebrate learning and the holidays with this Project Based Learning unit. Your students will love helping Mrs. Claus plan a Christmas dinner and calculate how many batches of cookies to bake for Santa's helpers. In addition to solving word problems, students will be graphing, doubling, tripling recipes, reading charts, writing, and working with spreadsheets.

This student-centered PBL unit incorporates collaboration and differentiation by giving student choice. This challenge requires students to use inquiry, critical thinking, and creativity during the activities of high-interest cross-curricular [math, ELA, technology].

IN THIS ACTIVITY...

  • Tally and Graph Favorite Christmas Treats (2 pages)
  • Mrs. Claus’ Raspberry Crumb recipe
  • Mrs. Claus’ Butter cookies recipe
  • Use Spreadsheets (formulas included) to calculate doubling, tripling, etc. the recipe
  • Write your recipe for your own Favorite Christmas Treat
  • Steps in making Hot Chocolate
  • Nutritional labels (2 pages)
  • Answer questions – Reading Nutritional Labels with Answer Sheet
  • Story Problem Task Cards with answers
  • Christmas Dinner Shopping List with Direction Sheet with Spreadsheet (formulas included)
  • Job applications for Santa's helpers
  • Writing Activities - How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas, If I Were Santa's Elf, If I Were Santa's Reindeer
  • iPad activity - Pic Collage for descriptive words describing Mrs. Claus

Teachers love this unit because it integrates digital learning into the project as students use spreadsheets and apps. In addition, teachers can easily adapt this PBL for enrichment or gifted students in other grade levels.
