Description

“Chinese to English ESL Newcomer Activities: Things-in-School Vocabulary” - Worksheets

~By now you know that dual language resources are essential to support our ESL student population. “Chinese to English ESL Newcomer Activities: Things-in-School Vocabulary” is designed for building student vocabulary to facilitate the development of English speaking and reading skills in Chinese ESL newcomers. This ESL newcomers activities resource contains 40 of the most common school related vocabulary words along with picture worksheet. Useful for back to school ESL lessons to quickly engage your ESL students.

General Chinese to English ESL newcomer activities for use include:

  • ESL newcomer activities speaking practice -
  • ESL Chinese Student reference binder supplement -
  • Reading & writing center activities -
  • ESL newcomer activities bulletin board displays -

Specific ESL newcomer activities for use include:

1.First, give each Chinese ESL newcomer a copy of the vocabulary lists. Then have each student identify vocabulary words they already know in English by highlighting or putting a checkmark next to those words. Find out how many of the words each student already knows in English. Do some students know all the words? Do some know only a few?

Now you can identify which students are absolute ESL beginners versus those who already have some knowledge of the English language. Plan your Chinese ESL newcomer activities and small groups based on this knowledge.

2.Play a listening game. Give each student a copy of the vocabulary list. In random order, say an English word from the list. Students scan the list and circle the word.

3.Play a speaking game. Using a round robin method, have each ESL Chinese student pick a vocabulary word from the list and verbally use it in a sentence to the best of their ability.

For example, a beginner might say, You the teacherwhereas an advanced student who selects the same word might say “You are the teacher.” Try not to focus on issues of non-standard speaking. In other words, don’t correct the beginner with “You are the teacher.” At this time it’s more important to get the students to “speak.” Correcting verbal errors too soon often causes students to stay in the silent period longer.

4.Use for spelling test. As the students learn the vocabulary words, they should also learn how to spell them. Keep the spelling tests short. Five words for ESL beginners and no more than 10 words for ESL intermediate/advanced.
