How can I use this Chinese New Year Lantern Craft?

With the end of the Chinese New Year comes the vibrant, colorful Lantern Festival. Students can learn about this tradition with a fun Chinese New Year Lantern Craft. You can string the finished lanterns up in the classroom or let students take them home to show off.

Print off this sweet Chinese New Year lantern template ready for younger children to create a beautiful Chinese New Year collage.

Cut up squares of different red materials (tissue paper, paper, patterned paper, serviettes, newspaper painted with watercolours - anything!) and a few flashes of gold (sweet wrappers are sometimes handy for this!). Leave these bright squares in a tray and let children cover the lantern surface to create a sweet Chinese New Year collage. This is one of our favourite Chinese New Year crafts ideas because it is a simple print and go activity with so many possibilities. To give the end craft a more polished feel, we found it worked best if the lines on the surface of the lantern were drawn over again with a black permanent marker, if they were covered with the collage materials.
