Description

Polished, graphic, 2-page 2014 PDF! Focuses on student reading and critical analysis of a hot Child Development / Psychology topic: genetics testing -- especially pre-natal genetics testing. From the preview, you may note details on the Human Genome Project as well as relevant dates in the last twenty+ years indicating advancements and legal determinations in regard to such genetic testing. The PDF invites students to work as a whole class as well as an invvitation to partner work, diagramming their and others' ideas, and collaborative team work to conclude the lesson plan with an exit ticket. EVerything is done for you; you'll just have to make the copies for your class(es)!

With step-by-step directions for your students, this PDF involves assisting secondary Psychology students in the following:

a.) comprehending contemporary informational articles on the topic of and issues related to human genome project and genetic testing
b.) analyzing the potential pro's and con's of genetic testing
c.) evaluating their own feelings/thoughts in relationship to their reading
d.) connecting their own ideas, questions, and concerns with those of their peers and as a whole group in regard to genetics testing
e.) recording their ideas, concerns, questions, etc. in diagram form as well as any additional thoughts in the form of an exit ticket, for your use as a formative assessment

Students will be encouraged to apply their learning from the two relevant and contemporary online hyperlinked articles (which you will need to print & make a class set of for your students) to their own lives and pertinent to your unit's objectives on child development. In this way, you will be inviting students to develop the Common Core State Standards for reading/writing and speaking/listening with informational text, as well as utilizing 21st Century Skills, including critical thinking/problem-solving. Students will thus be invited into the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy (eg. moving beyond understanding to application, analysis, and evaluation)!

This informational (double) article analysis works perfectly into a Child Development unit, especially following genetic defects, and stimulates varied, thoughtful, and passionate discussion; it would pair nicely to follow any of the Psychology items in my store for Child Development (a very thorough PPT is available) and/or other informational/analytic text items. I am confident that not only will you enjoy this activity, but that your students will as well. Thank you for visiting my store, and I look forward to your feedback!
