If you are looking for resources to help your students informational text skills, then this is for you. I have been teaching nonfiction reading using this text for years, and it is always one of our favorite units. The book is both an excellent example of quality nonfiction writing and highly engaging for middle school students.

This product is a chapter by chapter student guide to support informational text Chew on This by Eric Schlosser.

Students will

  • cite evidence from the text
  • trace and evaluate an argument
  • analyze the author's writing style
  • maintain personal vocabulary charts
  • practice Cornell Notes
  • answer higher-order thinking comprehension questions

Additionally, there is an emphasis on

  • text structures (description, problem/solution, sequence, compare/contrast and cause/effect)
  • propaganda techniques (bandwagon, testimonial, scare tactics, glittering generalities, card stacking, and name calling) throughout the student guide.
