Description
Checks and Balances Writing Assignment/ DBQ
Digital and Print versions included
Checks and Balances is an important part of every American government unit. This resource can be used two ways: have students just answer the questions or apply their knowledge to a writing piece.
These activities could be used in class, with a partner, or even on assessments. They also would work well to provide extra support to students who are working improving their primary source understanding. It aligns with the Common Core, by asking students to pull specific details from the sources to back up their answers.
1. Checks and Balances: Primary Source activity with 7 documents. Students will be asked to carefully examine a chart and excerpts of the Constitution to express their understanding of checks and balances. It is followed by writing prompt. Students are asked to use details from the sources (documents) to answer a question. For each primary source, there are guiding questions to answer. Also included is a structured writing graphic organizer that may be useful.
2. If you are looking for an assignment that is written in a Document Based Question (DBQ) format, it is also included. It has a historical context as well as a task. Since there are 7 documents, it is a great practice of the DBQ skill. If you need to shorten the assignment, you can easily exclude some of the documents and still be able to practice writing.
Note: The file is 11 pages long and includes essay writing paper to use.
PowerPoint included -- Project the handout to model and review answers!
New: Google slide version also included! Students can type their answers and submit to your google classroom. You will have copy the link and then make a copy to share with all your students! Please copy and paste the given google link into your browser. This will force you to make a copy.
