Description

Humorous, kid-friendly Middle School ceramics art project! Student favorite! Student-tested with 7th and 8th-grade art students! High school art students will love this unique ceramics project too! Fun ceramics opportunity to sculpt a creative human/gnome form!

I invented an easy pinch pot method to create Ceramic Garden Gnome Sculptures that resulted in very successful results for all of my students, regardless of prior experience!

This 30-page PDF Resource includes:

  • 8-page step-by-step illustrated handout that outlines the method used to help students easily create these whimsical sculptures.
  • A detailed lesson plan with CORE Standards.
  • Printable clay chart to assist students when selecting the right amount of clay to keep all sculptures the desired size.
  • 20 color photos of gnome sculpture project examples constructed by 7th and 8th-grade students
  • Helpful tips to repair gnomes that might break or need parts replaced after firing.
  • Painting tips to achieve successful paint applications to enhance the fired gnome sculptures.
  • A handout that introduces the lesson with the History of Gnomes, gnome legend and folklore, and German gnome sculptures. Also, students will see the world's most valuable Gnome "Lampy"!
  • A humorous game called "Name your Gnome" uses your initial and birth month to help students choose a funny name for their gnome. Lots of giggles!
  • Color photo Handout of actual garden gnome sculptures for inspiration!
  • Paint these sculptures, or glaze them for outdoor use, depending on your budget and situation.

A great low-fire, earthenware ceramics lesson, all ready to go, with everything you need to make it super easy and fun for you and your students!
