What educators are saying

One of my favorite labs to reinforce osmosis. We even make a competition to see who can get the smallest and biggest gummy bears.
This was great! I've done this experiment before, but this was such a nice way to keep up with the data and to allow the students to be more independent.

Description

This is a 4 page lab using gummy bears and their delicious gelatin matrixes as cell models to demonstrate the process of osmosis. This traditional spin is designed to be easy-peasy- just dixie cups, gummy bears, salt, rulers, and water! Students must perform calculations (volume, percent change) and graph their data, as well as answer questions pertaining to osmosis and environments (hypotonic; hypertonic).

This lab is spanned over the course of 3 days- it is designed so that students chip away at it each day to obtain information and answer questions.

An editable version is available should you wish you dismiss the graphing, add specific measurements, or alter the materials list.
