What educators are saying

My students loved using this activity. It was very engaging. I used it as an enrichment lesson for my proficient students.
My students really enjoyed completing this project. They were highly motivated throughout the project!

Description

In this assignment, students complete a job application in the point of view of an organelle or cell part applying for a job in a cell at the company CELLS-R-US. Students must know about whether the organelle is a part of a plant or animal cell or both, the functions of the organelle, and the importance of the organelle. This resource can be used as an alternative to a worksheet, in-class assignment, homework, project, or assessment.

The organelles and cells parts listed in the application include the cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplast, cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, mitochondria, nuclear membrane, nucleolus, nucleus, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum (smooth and rough), vacuoles, and vesicles.

A job announcement page, blank job application, completed example, grading sheet, and teacher information pages are all included in this resource.

The blank job application, announcement, and grading sheet come in Spanish and English.

Read what teachers are saying about this resource:

NGSSMS-LS1-2
Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways the parts of cells contribute to the function. Emphasis is on the cell functioning as a whole system and the primary role of identified parts of the cell, specifically the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, cell membrane, and cell wall. Assessment of organelle structure/function relationships is limited to the cell wall and cell membrane. Assessment of the function of the other organelles is limited to their relationship to the whole cell. Assessment does not include the biochemical function of cells or cell parts.
NGSSMS-LS1-1
Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells. Emphasis is on developing evidence that living things are made of cells, distinguishing between living and non-living cells, and understanding that living things may be made of one cell or many and varied cells.
