Description
With this engaging activity, students access the causes of the Great Depression by analyzing a variety of primary and secondary sources - including charts, graphs, quotes from historians, primary source quotes, and visuals. Although the stock market crash as often cited as the primary cause of the crash, there were many underlying economic issues that ran as an undercurrent in the 1920s. This resource takes those underlying issues and makes then accessible to students.
There are five stations in total, including:

- 1930s America in Color - This viewing guide provides a great overview to the America in COLOR series from the Smithsonian Channel. I love these videos because they utilize primary sources to tell the story of U.S. History. This episode focuses on the 1930s.
- Causes of the Great Depression - With this engaging activity, students access the causes of the Great Depression by analyzing a variety of primary and secondary sources - including charts, graphs, quotes from historians, primary source quotes, and visuals.
- Hardships in the Great Depression - With this activity, students will analyze images from the Great Depression to learn about the lives of the people who lives through that time. They will explore the context that photographs can provide to an era and the limitations of that photography. This presentation also discusses the onset of the Great Depression, Herbert Hoover, and the Bonus Army.
- Migration during the Great Depression - With this activity, students will learn about the process of organizing ideas for a DBQ. They will analyze a subset of documents relating to migration during the Great Depression.
- FDR (Roosevelt) and the New Deal - With this interactive slideshow, students will learn about the major legislation in the New Deal that was created to address the issues of the Great Depression. Students will analyze the programs, assess how they may have helped individual citizens by examining letters to Roosevelt, and examine the impact of the New Deal.
