Description
Monopoly is my favorite board game to use in my classroom and there are so many different ways to use it! You can find ways to pull lessons and concepts from personal finance, financial literacy, accounting, business, entrepreneurship, life skills, family and consumer science, home economics, and math using Monopoly, and the students love playing it.
This resource is used to help students realize the importance of tracking all income and expenses, and using that knowledge of cashflow to make budgeting decisions. In this activity, students track all of their transactions over the course of gameplay. They log the description of the transaction, whether it was income or expense, category, and their updated balance. The balance on their sheet should always match the total of their cash, and I encourage you to have the students reconcile their ledgers with their actual cash to make sure they match.
Students quickly realize that it's not as easy as it sounds to track cash flow. We can help them practice now to build those skills for the future!
The second part of the activity is calculating their net worth and this is how I determine the winner of the game in my class. We play for a fixed time period, and at the end of the time period, the students calculate their net worth by adding together the value of all their assets and subtracting any liabilities ("what you own minus what you owe"). There is a calculation area on the activity sheet along with instructions for the students to assist them in their calculation.
In this resource you will get:
- Printable Cashflow Tracker and Net Worth Calculator activity sheet.
- My recommended rules for playing Monopoly in your classroom with a time limit and the winner being the person with the highest net worth.
- Teacher prompts and suggestions for maximizing the effectiveness of the resource and reducing the work you have to do on your end.
