    Description

Introduce students to online tools that can help them negotiate a fair trade-in value or selling price for a vehicle or live within their means if needing to finance a car! This unit details the math that is used by online car depreciation calculators, auto loan calculators, and reverse auto loan calculators. Students explore exponential regression on Desmos and monthly payment/principal formulas by hand then navigate the online tools, discovering the same answers instantaneously! With the ease of the calculators, students see the effects of differing down payments, interest rates, and term lengths and start thinking how they would personally apply those factors in the future.

Down the road, students will probably never recall the details of the formulas, but they will become familiar with the online calculators & remember those tools are powered by math! Knowing why and how to use the online calculators and what information should be analyzed from them can help students make informed financial decisions with respect to vehicle purchases in the future.

    Note for Intervention Specialists:

Consider any of MathMotivation’s Applied Math resources for your students! The entire Applied Math curriculum has been tested out & is still currently being used for special education students on IEPs. Many of these students have spent three years in a resource room for high school math then entered into the general education inclusion setting for Applied Math their senior year. (*These students are not alternatively assessed.*) All of the Applied Math materials are great resources for general education & special education!
