Description

Kids learn about capitalizing celestial objects with a lively, interactive Power Point presentation. After direct instruction, a series of sentences appear on the screen. Students put their thumbs up or down to signal whether it is capitalized correctly. Corresponding mini lesson plans offer two practice sheets (with answer keys) and three alternative activities that ask students to apply their knowledge.

This set was developed for intermediate students, but it is also appropriate for reteaching, review, and remediation at the middle school level. It’s great for science class too!

What’s Included:

  • PowerPoint presentation
  • Lesson plans with extensions
  • Two worksheets with answers

Overview:

  1. Direct Instruction – Display and discuss rules for capitalization of objects in space. Instruction focuses on capitalization of proper nouns (but not articles, conjunctions, or short prepositions, e.g., the Great Square of Pegasus), as well as capitalizing of Earth, Sun, and Moon when referring to an object in space.
  2. Guided Practice – Continue the presentation with practice exercises. Students put their thumbs up or down to show whether the phrase is capitalized correctly. This is great for whole-class engagement and formative assessment.
  3. Independent Practice – Worksheet A allows students to practice their new skills independently.
  4. Assessment – Worksheet B may be used as assessment or additional practice.
  5. Extensions – Three extension activities allow students to practice capitalizing celestial objects in real-life situations.

If you're looking for something digital, try the Made-for-Easel version. Kids learn through an online tutorial.

Enjoy teaching!
