What educators are saying

This was a great "right before break" project. Students had fun and enjoyed working together to create their candy cane grabber. I might adapt it for a project right before spring break and use peeps.
My students were very engaged while completing this activity. It is a great resource, thank you for creating and sharing!

Description

Reign in the crazy on before Christmas vacation by engaging your students in STEM!

Students need to create a tool that will pick up a candy cane from a cup of lots of candy canes. They are trying to see how many they can pick up in 30 seconds. Brainstorm what types of tools could do that, but explain that the materials they are using it is not just as simple as bending something into a hook.

Materials: I include a suggestions in the product, but you are not limited to these and you can swap some for other materials too- depending on what you have. The idea is to give materials that CAN NOT be bent into a hook easily…that is the challenge- to create some kind of hook or tweezer type device.

Have students work in team of 2-you can do 3, but the best collaboration for this happens with smaller number of students.
