Canadian Government Our Court System

This social studies unit was created to support the Ontario Social Studies Curriculum for Grade 5, and is part of a larger Canadian Government and Citizenship unit available in my TPT store. These activities are aimed at Grades 4 to 6 students, but could easily be used in Grade 7 or 8.

This resource introduces students to the various levels of courts within Canada, the roles of different people that participate in the court system and in trials, and also gives students an opportunity to reflect on various practices within our court system, such as how judges and juries are chosen.

This resource includes

• a quiz with answer key
• a Readers' Theatre script for A Trial for Dayan.

The readers' theatre script tells the story of an "alien" who comes to earth only to find himself in trouble with the law for a practice that was not illegal on his planet. There are roles for 20 students (including 12 jurors), and the rest of the students might want to be reporters or spectators. The final scene of the play is not written, as the "jurors" will have the opportunity to either write this scene before acting it out, or just do it as an impromptu scene. This allows your students to think about their own views and opinions, and to work together with their peers to arrive at a unanimous decision.
