Canada's Confederation Puzzle

Learn and practice the important dates in Canadian Confederation with this puzzle. Many students are surprised that Canada began with just 4 provinces and that a series of conferences and purchase made the map of Canada look like it does today. This puzzle has multiple versions and all versions come in black and white and in colour. Choose the version that fits your class and needs.

How to Play:

Students should begin with the puzzle piece marked 1867. They then need to find the pieces with the provinces which joined confederation in 1867. Students place these pieces so that the province name is facing the 1867 piece (the year they joined confederation). On each of the puzzle pieces there is a year and a province/territory printed on it. Some pieces have only a province/territory. These are ‘edge’ pieces. Nothing will connect to these pieces.

Other Hints:

The name of the province or territory faces the year that the particular province or territory joined confederation. I like to say they are ‘toe’ to ‘toe’

Copy the puzzle on card stock if you want to keep it year after year.

You could copy on plain paper and have students assemble and glue into their notebook
