Description

This kit will allow you to transform your classroom into the perfect campsite for a reading & math skill review! Be sure to download the preview + read this full description to get all the details on this kit.

Your "campers" will love these engaging activities, and you will love how simple this transformation can truly be!

This product includes 5 Language Arts activities and 5 Math activities that review the following skills: main idea and key detail, sequence, cause and effect, close reading, parts of speech, multiplying single digit factors, multiplying single digit by two-digit factors, understanding properties of multiplication, understanding strategies for multiplication, place value (expanded and standard form), addition using two-digit addends (with and without regrouping) and solving multiplication and division word problems.

The Language Arts activities included & their CCSS alignment are as follows:

  1. Close & Cozy Reading – Students will use close reading skills (such as annotating) to read an informational text about hibernation. (RF.3.4)
  2. Respond to Reading – Students will answer multiple-choice PARCC style questions about the text about the main idea of the passage, the main idea of a section, supporting details of the main idea, vocabulary, basic comprehension, and text structure. (RI.3.1, RI.3.2, RI.3.3, RI.3.4, RI.3.8)
  3. Sequencing S’mores – Students are tasked to write the steps to building the perfect s’more using sequence words. (RI.3.3, W.3.2)
  4. Wordy Wood Piles – This activity includes 2 options. One asks for students to sort cards based on if the words are common or proper nouns. The second variation asks for students to sort cards based on their part of speech. (L.3.1)
  5. Camping Cause + Effect – This task includes three different options. There is a matching task for students to connect the cause and effect of camping related events. There is also an interactive I-spy task or a worksheet version of the same task where students read a camping related cause and are asked to think of and write the effect of that event. (RI.3.3)

The Math activities included & their CCSS alignment are as follows:

  1. Ants on a Log – Students will use their understanding of place value, standard, and expanded form to read the standard form logs and identify which ant cards would represent that value in expanded form. (2.NBT.A.3)
  2. Fishing for Factors – Students will select a factor to wear as their fishing cap and will use a “fishing pole” to fish for their second factor. Students will then multiply those factors together. This task offers options for differentiation including two-digit numbers as factors, where students could potentially practice using the distributive property. Students could also fish for multiple factors and practice using the associative property. (3.OA.A.1)
  3. Write a Campfire Song – Students will use their understanding of multiplication properties and strategies to write a math song. (3.OA.B.5, 3.OA.B.6)
  4. Word Problems in the Woods – This activity includes two options. The first option allows students to search for multiplication & division word problems around the room or “woods” and solve the problem on their recording sheet. The second option allows students to solve the same problems but has a QR code option for students to check their own work. (3.OA.A.3)
  5. Firefly Addition – Students will “catch” two fireflies and add their values together. This activity includes several options for recording sheets – a printable option for students to record each problem OR a reusable sheet that can be placed in a dry erase sleeve and used over + over again. (3.NBT.A.2)

Each activity is outlined in detail so that you can see the standard alignment & assess your students easily using the answer keys provided.

In addition, I have provided an editable tool that will allow you to create your own camping themed task cards to address skills and concepts that are specific to the needs of your students! To do this, I provide:

  • 24 camping themed, editable task cards
  • a recording sheet for 8 questions
  • a recording sheet for 16 questions
  • a recording sheet for 20 questions
  • a recording sheet for 24 questions

So what's the summary? With this purchase you will receive:

  • an implementation guide
  • tips & tricks to making the transformation mind-blowing
  • access to photos and links for inspiration
  • decor ideas
  • an interactive table of contents for easy access to each resource
  • table tents for easy set-up
  • student activity pages & answer keys
  • options for interactive and technology integration
  • 5 math review activities (see preview & description above)
  • 5 language arts review activities (see preview & description above)

Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. Understand the following as special cases:
Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)
