Description

Applications of derivatives continue with this flipchart to simplify your presentations!!!! All your notes and examples in one place!!!! No need to open the textbook or write problems to refer to. Just start and complete each day’s lesson on the unit with this flipchart. I divide Ch. 3 on derivative applications into two tests. In Ch. 3A, the students use derivatives to find absolute and relative extrema, increasing/decreasing intervals, concavity and points of inflection, and sketch graphs using this information: Calculus Ch. 3A: Curve Sketching Unit Flipchart

In this flipchart, Ch. 3B, students use derivatives to work optimization problems and more linear approximations and to approximate error using differentials (a great forerunner to the next chapter on integrals). I let the students use their graphing calculators for these problems, but they can be worked analytically. There are 22 flipchart pages which can be completed in approximately 5 days of 50-minute classes.

Each flipchart file in my Calculus Units series contains definitions, theorems, examples and practice problems with plenty room on each page for you or the students to work the problems on the flipchart. My textbook teaches transcendental functions later in the year, so you will not find any applications using natural log, exponential or inverse trig functions in these notes.
