    Description

This CVC Short vowel pack provides you with 10 sets of task card activities and 9 sets of worksheets for each short vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u). As you know learning to easily read CVC words is an important part of the reading process as it enables our students to quickly see the 'chunks' in bigger words, which in turn aids them in the decoding process. But in order to for our students to learn this, they need plenty of exposure and opportunities to interact with the knowledge.

In this CVC Short Vowel Pack, you will find each word represented in a number of formats to provide a variety of ways for your learners to interact with the short vowel sounds including:

    • decoding & blending
    • reading
    • matching
    • building
    • tracing and writing
    • hearing missing sounds (beginning, middle, and end)

    Short vowel word families included;

    • Short A - ab, ad, ag, am, an, ap, at.
    • Short E - eb, ed, eg, em, en, et.
    • Short I - ib, id, ig, in, ip, it, ix
    • Short O - ob, od, og, op, ot, ox
    • Short U - ub, ud, ug, um, un, up, us, ut, ux

Each of my CVC short vowel sound packs follows the same format to aid student learning and understanding of the short vowel sounds and helping to ensure success without overwhelming with constantly having to learn new instructions.

The activities will work great in a small guided group situation, literacy centers, or free choice centers.

Included in this Short Vowel CVC task card & worksheet word pack is:

    Task Cards:

    • Word Posters - these can either be printed as a whole page and placed on the wall for easy reference or printed smaller to make reference ring cards.
    • Word Family and Word Cards - These come with a header card and picture/word cards. They can be used as a sorting activity (into family groups), pocket chart, or wall display.
    • Read it, build it, trace, and write it. The building can be done with the supplied letter cards or magnets. Great for practicing decoding & blending, writing skills, and letter recognition.
    • Word Family picture sorting - look at the picture, say the word, and place it on the correct word family card (this activity only uses the larger word families).
    • Onset & Rime blending cards - learners need to say the sound on the onset card and find the correct rime card to complete the word.
    • Read and Clip it Cards - read the 3 words and find the one that matches the picture.
    • Jigsaw - word to picture matching.
    • Picture to Word Matching - decode the word and find is matching picture - can be played as a memory game as well.
    • Missing Middle sound cards - best used during small group time. This is to really emphasize the vowel sound in each word. Students say the individual sounds of each letter as they slide the vowel tile in and then blend the sounds together to read the word.
    • Missing Initial Sound cards - say the picture, hear the first sound of the word add it to the card to complete the word.
    • Missing final sound - say the picture, hear the last sound of the word add it to the card to complete the word.
    • Build the word cards - look at the picture, say the word, build the word.

    Worksheets:

    • Picture Matching - This activity helps with decoding, blending of sounds, writing, cutting, and pasting skills. Your learners will cut out the pictures and then read the words to find which picture belongs before gluing the picture. They then trace the word.
    • Word Matching - focuses on decoding, blending, writing, cutting, and pasting skills. Similar to picture matching, in this activity, your learners cut out the words, read the words, and match them to the correct picture. As additional fine motor skill practice, your students can then color the pictures.
    • Which Word - focuses on decoding and blending sounds. Your learners look at each picture and read the words underneath to determine which word matches the picture. You can also include coloring the picture for additional fine motor skill practice.
    • Real Word or Silly Word - focuses on decoding, blending, and cutting and pasting skills. Your students cut out the words and then decode and blend the words to hear if the word is a real word or a silly word before pasting it in the correct column. For extra practice and to help them determine if it is a real or silly word is to try and put it into a sentence.
    • Missing Beginning Sounds - focuses on hearing the beginning sound of a word and writing letters. Your learners will look at the picture, say the word, listen for the beginning sound and write that in the space to complete the word.
    • Missing End Sounds - focuses on hearing the end sounds of a word and writing letters. Your learners will look at the picture, say the word and listen to the end sound and write that in the space to complete the word.
    • Read, Color & Write - focuses on the decoding and writing of words. Your learners will look at the picture then read the three words. They will color the correct word then write the word in the provided space.
    • Read and Sort - focuses on decoding, cutting, and pasting skills. Your learners will cut out the words, read the words, and paste them in the correct column (short a and not short a) This is focusing on noticing the middle sound of each word.
    • Find and Write - focuses on decoding, blending, and writing. Your learners need to find the 10 words on the page. They color the square (you can bump up the engagement here by just using highlighters or smelly pens), they then write the word in the space provided.

This pack also includes pages with the UK spelling of the word colour - you would only print those pages if you need them.

There are also pages for mom, mum and alternative pictures for cot.
