Elkonin boxes are an essential tool to help your students build phonemic awareness. Using Elkonin boxes and counters (such as Unifix cubes, coins, beads, bottle caps, etc.) students will orally segment phonemes or sounds in various CVC words. This is an effective activity for small group instruction, interventions, and independent work. This would also be perfect to incorporate into your Daily 5 (as a word work activity). With this resource, your students will increase their phonemic segmentation mastery!
To use:
There is a box for each sound of the word. For example, for the word “dog”, you would push a counter forward into each box for each sound that you say. “d/o/g”. After you push the sounds forward, you then slide your finger under it to exaggerate how text is read, left to right. If you laminated your resource, students can use dry erase markers to write each letter in the corresponding box as they become more advanced.
