What educators are saying

These are great challenges for my students as they finish work up early. I have also used a few as class wide competitions and are great team building activities.
My students (all ELLs and international students) loved this resource. Used it as a review/closing activity for our Canadian History class! so good I will be using it again!

Description

If you are looking for a team-building activity to keep your students engaged during a social studies class or a fun way to introduce (or use throughout) a unit on Canada, then THE GREAT CANADIAN ESCAPE is for you! There are six Canadian-themed (trivia) challenges included in this file.

Do we have to complete ALL of the challenges? No, you can mix- and-match the challenges, as each puzzle is independent of the other. As the teacher, you can decide which puzzles you may want to use and in which order they will be completed. Several detailed and thorough teacher instruction pages have been included, which provide differentiated instructions and suggestions for the various challenges. Answer keys have also been provided for ALL of the challenges!

Group size: 3-5 students (Note: This can be completed as an individual and/or pair activity)

Time: Approximately 30 minutes per challenge (Provide hints along the way if time is a factor!)

Materials: Aside from the materials that you would already have in your classroom (pencils, pens, scissors and colored pencils or crayons), no additional supplies are needed! These escape room-style games were created as a print-and-go resource.

HOW to use this with your students: (several, flexible options)

• One activity a day, for the # of activities used

• As a complete activity (over several, continuous class periods)

WHEN to use this with your students:

• As bonus work for students who finish their work early

• As a homework activity to promote critical thinking skills

• As a class reward for positive behavior/work ethic

THE TASK:

Oh, Canada! You’ve always dreamed of taking a trip across Canada and now’s your chance! Visit Canada coast to coast by answering some fun facts and information about the country. If correct, you will successfully ‘escape’ on the vacation of a lifetime!

Canadian History #1:

How well do you know Canadian history? In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to be able to correctly identify some fun facts about Canada’s history. Be careful though! If you incorrectly answer any of the questions, you will get caught in a winter blizzard!

Road Trip #2:

How many Canadian sights/attractions can you identify? In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to race to answer trivia questions about each province and territory, then color each province and territory on the map according to the directions on the task cards.

Symbols and Cities #3:

In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to sharpen your pencil (and eyes!) and pay attention to the letters within the maze to identify important Canadian symbols. In addition, you will have to search to find all of the capital cities, including a hidden, mystery word.

Famous Canadians #4:

Using the cryptogram codes provided, you will work together to decode facts about famous Canadians in three separate activities. Then, you will attempt to unscramble all of the shaded letter boxes from the answers, which will provide you with the missing letters to a few more well-known Canadians.

Canadianisms #5:

That’s so Canadian, eh? In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to match up some Canadian items and expressions to their correct name, picture and/or fact. You will do this by placing the correct answer with its match in the magic number box. If your answers are all correct, the numbers in each column and row will add up to the exact same number. This is the “magic” number.

Canadian Trivia #6:

Are you smarter than a 5th (Canadian) grader? In order to successfully complete this challenge, you will have to sort through all of the true and false cards and place them into the correct column. Place the cards in order according to their numbers, then read left to right to reveal a secret word. Write the full word (a Canadian person, place or thing) in the puzzle box.

*Upon completion of the challenges, three themed ("The Great Canadian Escape") editable certificates have been included, so you can easily type in a name and date and give each student who participated something for their efforts! In addition, a post-challenge reflection has also been included, as well as a participation rubric to hold your students accountable during the activities and challenges!*
