Take this bundle for a spin by applying business ethics, workplace culture, and a job description from a workplace to the relatable experience of the classroom. The FREE The Classroom as a Workplace Activity will help start the conversation about ethics, classroom culture, and student expectations with your students. Students will make ethical standard recommendations for the classroom, describe positive leadership, attitudes, values, beliefs, relationships, and behaviors for those involved in the classroom, and write a job description for a classmate based on qualifications, responsibilities/ duties, basic information about the class, a description of the class culture, and benefits of taking the course.

Kick-off this unit with the Workplace Skills: Communication Styles activity set. In this activity, students will research four communication styles (passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive) and list the key characteristics of each. Next, students will explore strategies to improve communication with each group. Follow up the research component with 8 open-ended reflection questions. Close the lesson with a checkpoint activity to assess student mastery.

In the Workplace Skills: Conflict Resolution activity set students will research avoiding, accommodating, competing, collaborating, and compromising as conflict resolution strategies. Next, students will provide a conflict resolution strategy recommendation for 10 scenarios. Last, students will use one scenario to craft a written advice column-style response recommending a strategy, explaining why the strategy was selected, providing a detailed plan for how to deal with the issue, and explanation for how their actions would affect all parties involved.

The Workplace Skills: Leadership Styles activity covers 10 leadership styles including autocratic, bureaucratic, coaching, democratic, laissez-faire, pacesetting, servant, transactional, transformational, and visionary. Students will become the expert on leadership style and then share their findings with the class. Students will then respond to 4 reflection questions. Extend the lesson by having students create word art on leadership. Students will be able to describe a variety of leadership styles, relate leadership styles to their own experiences, and list effective leadership characteristics.

In the Workplace Skills: Negotiation activity set students will define negotiation, identify several negotiating techniques/ strategies, list skills related to negotiating, describe examples of when employees would negotiate with other employees and when an employee would negotiate with an employer, and detail how to prepare for a negotiation. Students will start by completing a concept map with their research on these topics. Next, students will use a provided scenario to brainstorm and write a script utilizing negotiation tactics. Finally, students will provide student-to-student feedback on their scripts. Students will be able to describe strategies, skills, and applications of negotiation, compose a script utilizing negotiating tactics, and evaluate negotiating scripts.

In the Workplace Skills: Time Management activity set students will research the benefits of time management, problems with procrastination, the technology available to help with time management, improving concentration and focus, prioritizing tasks, getting and staying organized, and work-life balance. Students will complete an article review on a topic related to time management, design a digital or physical poster, and create a work-life balance vision board.

In the Workplace Skills: Goal Setting activity set students will create a mission and vision statement for your course, set a short- and long-range S.M.A.R.T. goal for themselves, and visualize how to achieve one of their goals by creating a treasure map with actionable steps to accomplishing their goal. Students will be able to define mission and vision statements, explain S.M.A.R.T. goal criteria, and visualize a personal goal.

For the Workplace Skills: Personal Qualities activity set students will define positive personal qualities, rank their own personal qualities, respond to 10-reflection questions, and create a comic strip or short story with the theme of a selected personal quality. Personal qualities covered in this activity include leadership, respect, punctuality, integrity, lifelong learning, perseverance, fitness/health, global perspective, initiative, work ethic, time management, teamwork/ collaboration, professionalism, conflict resolution, commitment, and competitiveness. Students will be able to define positive personal qualities, reflect on their own personal qualities, and describe how effective professionals operate in a positive work environment.

Next up, the Workplace Skills: Organization activity set will have students read 8 task cards with informational text and respond to corresponding application questions. Students will use one of the aspects of organization to design a video storyboard and social media post sharing workplace organizational tips. Organization skills covered in this activity include labeling files, sorting emails, email usage, bookmarking websites, scheduling, task management, prioritizing tasks, and filing paperwork. Students will be able to describe workplace organizational skills and create a product applying their knowledge.

Grab the Workplace Skills: Customer Service activity set where students will research customer service skills and apply these skills in various scenarios. Students will start by using the guided research questions to research customer service skills in the
workplace. Students will then give customer service advice to their team in an email format. Last, students will write a chat dialogue between a customer service representative and a customer displaying quality customer service. Students will incorporate three customer service skills in their dialogue. Students will be able to describe customer service skills and apply these skills to various scenarios.

Assess student mastery of workplace skills and apply teamwork in an engaging escape-style activity. The Workplace Skills Escape Activity requires students to work through a set of tasks, referred to as locks, and solve each puzzle. Students will collect 8 codes that will then be entered into an automatic answer-checking electronic form. Student workplace skill knowledge will be tested as students work together to solve the puzzles. No physical locks are needed to conduct this escape activity. This activity covers: customer service skills, conflict resolution strategies (including competing, accommodating, avoiding, collaborating, and compromising), leadership styles (including democratic, autocratic, and laissez-faire), personal qualities for employability, S.M.A.R.T. goals, prioritizing tasks, communication styles (including passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive), organization, and negotiation.
