What educators are saying

My students really liked this projects. They were engaged and it satisfied the requirements for the content standard.
This was a great resource to use as a final project with my students in an ethics class. They were very much engaged and it kept them interested throughout their group work. I loved being able to circulate the room and listen in on the conversations this created. Thanks so much!

Description

My students have enjoyed this project for its shock value. It allows for Student choice and it is a useful activity to facilitate student research and reporting on unethical business, political, and/or government scandals of the past while learning to differentiate between ethical and unethical behaviors.

Students will:

  • identify an unethical action or event of their choosing
  • explain why the event was/is unethical
  • list who is negatively affected
  • provide alternative 'Ethical' actions that would have been the 'right thing' to do for the parties involved.

Students will learn key ethics vocabulary in the process while further developing tech and presentation skills.

This activity can be easily completed remotely provided students have access to a computer and video chat options.

Warmup - Begin with a relevant ethical issue faced by students in their day to day at school. The question is designed to create debate before introducing the unit project.

Small Group Activity - Prime your students to perform independently by first having them work in small groups to apply the 3-step process of identifying and resolving ethical issues. A few short scenarios will help engage your class in engaging dialog and cement concepts.

Main Activity - Students will work independently to create a slide presentation on a case where business leaders or politicians or heads of state have been accused of acting unethically. The lesson plan includes a detailed outline per slide to guide students through a deep dive into the scandal of their choosing.

Resource includes:

  • teacher lesson guide with notes to support educator
  • small group Warm-up activities with a graphic organizer (prime your students for the project)
  • List of scandals to research and create a detailed presentation - students may find their own topics as well
  • Detailed outline to help students break down tasks and to organize information
  • The 3-step process for ethics analysis doc
  • Student Rubric to guide students to better outcomes
  • Teacher rubric to use to grade student performance
  • Peer Review Doc to encourage student-to-student interaction
  • Observer Doc to engage students on presentation day and maintain student engagement with the presenters.

This should take about a week+ to complete including presentations.
