This Bundle of 4 Canadian Government Plays or Readers’ Theatre can serve as an introduction to our system of Canadian government. Or, if you teach in Ontario, it can serve as a quick overview of our political system before plunging into the new grade 5 Social Studies’ Inquiry-based research expectations. The plays or readers' theatre can be used in different ways:
1. All the students can be divided into groups of 6 (or 5) and read through and discuss each play.
2. Each group of 6 (or 5) can be given a different play. After, they can be given a place mat to express what they got out of each play, or a jigsaw technique can be employed to discuss in a second group what was learned through the readers’ theatre.
3. Each student could also choose a play and a role to perform before an audience, if you want to use it for a drama mark as well.
This 6 character skit (of 5-7 pages each) explores 1. Canadian Federal Government, 2. Canadian Provincial and Territorial Government, 3. Canadian Municipal Government and 4. Terms of Canadian Government. The props are easily accessible and the humour will appeal to the students.
