Description

Students are fascinated by how dark the Brothers Grimm "children's stories" were before they were completely sanitized by Disney. Students feel like they are seeing the truth, and our students love it when they get the real deal. Due to the gritty and, frankly, violent nature of Brothers Grimm, I created this no-prep unit with high school students in mind.

I love doing this unit around Halloween because it is so creepy, but I have used it during every season.

1) Detailed teacher notes:

  • 2 reliable link options to the Brother's Grimm stories.

2) Assignment sheet with a variety of choices (tic/tac/toe).

3) Mini-lessons on

  • Paratext &
  • Target Audience so students can professionally and thoughtfully polish one of their creative responses.

4) Rubrics & Chances for marks:

  • Writing/ Reading,
  • Media, &
  • Oral Communication.

5) Reflection of Unit

This document is all formatted to 8.5 X 11, so it is printable (in-class) and or can be shared digitally with students.

For more spooky/ creepy topics, please consider a conversation from podcasts about the Salem Witch Trials, Horror Short Stories with lots of Stephen King options, or Read then Write a Scary Short Story with a mood focus.
