Children from different language backgrounds experience language differently depending on the nature of the language. Children who are learning two or more languages tend to acquire expressive language at a slightly later time. It is normal, but sometimes it may interfere with learning. Also, the rules of the first language may influence the way English is spoken. Furthermore, children from different language backgrounds experience culture differently than monolingual English speakers. These checklists are intended to be used over time for comparison purposes and to monitor progress.
