What educators are saying

My students were really engaged during this activity! This allowed them to compare the 3 branches and levels of government and discuss among themselves which card went where. Perfect hands on activity!
This helped my students to understand the branches of government better as it is always a difficult topic.

Description

Branches of American Government Card Sort
includes Levels of Government: Federal, State, and Local Government Card Sort

What are sort cards?
Sort cards are informational terms and facts printed on small cards that students sort into categories.

Students will learn America's 3 Branches of Government as well as differences between the Federal, State, and Local Governments by working collaboratively to sort fact cards into categories.

3 GREAT ACTIVITIES

1. Sort Cards
Students read fact cards about the branches of government, then sort them into three groups: Legislative, Executive, or Judicial. Repeat this same activity with Federal, State, and Local government fact cards.
(This activity works best when multiple card sets are available so students can work in groups or pairs.)

2. Around the Room
Label 3 corners of the room by the branches of government. Pass out one card to each student (some students may have to share a card) and have them go to the correct corner of the room. There students discuss whether all members are in the correct corner.
Repeat this activity by labeling areas in the room Federal Government, State Government, and Local Government and use corresponding fact cards.

3. Blank Sort Cards/ Note Organizer
A blank sheet is available for students to make their own fact cards to trade with a partner and sort. Can also be used as note organizer.

For a fun activity year after year print on card stock paper and laminate.
