What educators are saying

The resource worked very well. The students enjoyed the activities and they were able to relate much better to the brain functions. It took away the basic lecture for me and it gives me time to go more in depth.
My students were really excited to use this resource and work through the material. It fit perfectly into my unit!

Description

What's the best way to learn the anatomy and physiology of each part of the human brain? Use that part!

The Big Idea: This activity includes 15 stations (+ an 8-page student packet). Each station is about one specific part of the brain (ex. hypothalamus). At each station, students will complete a fun challenge to use that part of the brain! Here are a few examples:

  • The parietal lobe is crucial to spatial awareness. After reading a quick blurb on the parietal lobe, students will complete a jigsaw puzzle to utilize spatial awareness.
  • The temporal lobe helps you to remember both short-term and long-term memories. After reading a few sentences about the temporal lobe, students will complete a memory challenge!

Your high school students will understand the anatomy and physiology of the brain at an entirely new level using this reading and stations activity. There is very little prep required, no prior knowledge required, and every material needed to complete the lab is something that you probably already have on hand!

I use this lab in my own 11th and 12th grade classroom and was so pleasantly surprised by how much my juniors and seniors loved each and every station. They were 100% engaged 100% of the time... and fun was definitely had by all :).

Pages 1-4: In the first 4 pages of the lab, students will read short texts about the anatomy of the brain while answering questions within the packet. They will then label the major parts of the brain.

Pages 5-8: After reading and analyzing, students will head to the 15 stations! Each station focuses on a major part of the brain and what it does. Students will have to complete a task at that station that uses that specific portion of the brain! For example, at the cerebellum station students will complete a balance challenge. At the occipital lobe station, students will complete an online vision test.

While students are at each station, they will find the function of each part of the brain and write it on the last page of their packet (great information for developing your test).

The resources are available in both print and digital forms.

When you purchase this resource, you receive:

  • 1-page detailed teacher instructions
  • 8-page student lab packet (both PDF and Google Slides™ versions provided)
  • 15 Brain Stations (PDF, editable PowerPoint, and editable Google Slides™ versions provided)
  • A key to all activities

I personally use these notes to span 3 days in sync with my Anatomy of the Brain Doodle Notes. Here's how I time out my lessons on the anatomy and physiology of the brain:

Day 1: Brain Anatomy & Physiology

  • Brain Anatomy Doodle Notes - “The Brain” (covers cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem, and diencephalon)
  • “Use Your Brain” Activity pages 1 → 4

Day 2: Brain Anatomy & Physiology

  • Brain Anatomy Doodle Notes - “Anatomy of the Cerebral Cortex”
  • “Use Your Brain” Activity Stations (will only partially complete)

Day 3: Brain Anatomy & Physiology

  • Brain Anatomy Doodle Notes - “Brain Stem Anatomy” & “Diencephalon Anatomy”
  • “Use Your Brain” Activity Stations - finish!

This resource comes from my full Nervous System Unit! It is also included in my Full-Year Anatomy & Physiology Curriculum.
