What educators are saying

I loved the creativity and colourfulness of the work sheets which helped to motivate my students. Excellent ressources for evaluating their learning as well. Great background questions. Would recommend this to any teacher who wants to motivate their students to read "born a crime" in class.
This was extremely helpful as this was my first time both reading and teaching the book. My classes especially liked the class discussions. Everything you need to teach the book is included.

    Description

Born a Crime Unit Bundle comes with everything you need to teach this novel. The activities require students to read, write, talk, think, and create while engaging and challenging them.

    INCLUDED:

Born a Crime Unit Guide - This details suggestions on what to do when during this novel so that everything flows smoothly. Be sure to download this bonus file.

Born a Crime Pre-Reading Activity contains instructions for Pecha Kucha Presentations with 18 topics relating to the book, which is a much more interesting technique for presentations than the usual PowerPoints. Detailed instructions are given. A grading rubric for the teacher and an evaluation checklist for the students are also included. This activity will get them ready to read Born a Crime! While reading, they will be able to better connect with aspects of the book because they are more familiar with topics such as tribes and languages of South Africa, apartheid's laws and restrictions, and other topics mentioned in the book.

Creative Reading Guides - These reading guides for Born a Crime are sure to get your students' attention. They are attractively designed using black and white line art so that students can color them in if they would like. There are a variety of question types on these guides to get students thinking about this nonfiction book. IVocabulary is also included. These guides took a long time to make, but they were so much fun! A detailed answer key is provided for all of the reading guides.

Born a Crime Chapter Quizzes comes with 11 quizzes that cover the entire novel. These questions are mostly comprehension to see if students are reading and paying attention, but there are also some higher level thinking questions as well.

These quizzes are print and go in a PDF file. There are 2 versions of each quiz and an editable PowerPoint.

Video Clip Suggestions - There are 3 short clips I have previewed that will fit perfectly into certain chapters of the book.

Trevor Noah Says Activity - This activity includes 22 cards with insightful quotes from Trevor Noah and his mother, Patricia Noah. Students in small groups draw out a card and respond one at at time to that quote as someone in the group sets a 45 second timer. If students stop talking before time is up or keep saying "uhm," they are out. The game continues until there is a winner.

Activity - Witch Hunts in the 21st Century - Since witchcraft is mentioned in the book more than once, this activity connects really well. Students complete an anticipation guide to see what they think about witch hunts taking place today. Next, each student is assigned one non-fiction article to read out of 4 articles. They answer a reading guide on their own and get with those who have the same article to compare notes and become an expert on their assigned article. Then, students form groups of 4 students who all have different articles. They will complete some thought-provoking questions together. Finally, they will do an acrostic poem or a one pager to finalize their learning. This is an engaging and challenging activity that will get your students thinking critically!

Trevor Noah Resume - Students will learn about Trevor Noah's accomplishments while also review resume writing. Instructions and example is provided.

Character Theme Song - Students select songs that fit characters in the novel. Instructions and rubric are provided.

Puzzle Activity - I have included a puzzle from my Born a Crime Escape Room if you want to try it out.

Born a Crime Thinking / Review Stations is a great way to get your students talking about the novel, analyzing events, thinking critically about the characters, and more. There are 7 colorful stations and students move, collaborate, discuss, analyze, synthesize, think, and write in this activity. An extremely detailed answer key is also included so that you don't have to look anything up.

Born a Crime Final Test covers both comprehension and analysis. Students must remember events from the story, but they must also think critically in order to answer the questions. Test Includes 40 Multiple Choice, 10 True/False, 3 Written Response/Explanation, and 1 Short Essay (there are 2 essay choices) along with

2 Versions of the test to deter cheaters. Editable PowerPoint for both versions - make changes as you wish.

For more details on what is included, click each product in the bundle for a fuller description. The theme song and resume are included in the bonus file with the suggested guidelines.
