African American history between the Civil War and Civil Rights Movement is often overlooked, yet the era was full of influential leaders and moments that paved the way for future generations. Here students read brief but insightful bios about Washington, DuBois, and Garvey, who each advocated in very unique ways for African Americans. After analyzing and comparing these men using questions and a Venn diagram, students then read about Ida B Wells, a fascinating and brave female of the era. Students synthesize their knowledge by arguing which of the 3 male leaders she is most similar to, which provides good discussion because arguments could be made for all three. Could be completed in 1 day or stretched into more. Had a fantastic 2 day (45 minute classes) activity and discussion with my 9th graders using this resource. You could split the work into a jigsaw, do small groups, individual work, or finish for homework.
