What educators are saying

The students are very wiggly these days, so this tic-tac-toe game was a great way to sneak in teaching book care! They loved it.
My students love this game! I use this for a reward for classes that follow expectations. We play until everyone in the class has won, everyone get a prize.

Description

This is a 3-in-1 book care lesson for back to school time! It includes 27 lesson slides, a sorting activity, AND a tic tac toe (or blackout bingo) game with 20 cards. It pairs perfectly with the story What Happened to Marion's Book? by Brooke Berg. (Don't have the book? There are several YouTube readers who share Marion's story!)

NEW for Fall 2023! I've added new bookworm tokens to match my original story, Woody Bookworm Takes Care of Books (which is also sold here on TPT).

After reading either story, use my colorful book care slides to teach, or review, the basics of library book care. Then, pass out the game cards (and cute Marion or Woody tokens) as a fun review. Need a follow-up center? There's also a sorting activity that your students can work on during book exchange!

Speaking of reviews -- I always used this lesson set AGAIN right after winter break. It makes a super NO-STRESS lesson for that first week back. Ahhh...

You can rearrange the 27 book care slides to fit your lesson. Delete any that you don’t want to go over… or even split them up into more than one lesson, if you’re crunched for time.

TIC TAC TOE or Blackout Bingo Game
- 20 student game cards (I always double up my students, so more can win!)
- Calling cards
- "Marion" and "Woody" tokens to cover up the bingo or tic tac toe spots
- My instructions and tips

If it's K-2nd, we play 3-in-a-row bingo or tic tac toe as part of the lesson.
If it's 3rd... we may go either way depending on the class.
If 4th, we play tic tac toe or blackout bingo as a reward after book exchange.

LESSON TIPS:

✅ For tic tac toe tokens, one student uses the “Marion side” and the other uses the blank side... I let them do “rock-paper-scissors” to determine who gets which side. OR... you can use both the Marion and Woody tokens for your game.

✅The book care images come in two sizes:
PROJECT them to help your littles find the correct pictures on the game cards.
Or...*DESCRIBE what's on the small calling cards for older students.

*I might say… “The next tip is “Keep books in safe places. Look for the tall bookshelf.” Or, “The next one is “Keep books in safe places. Look for the messy desk.” (…and then I talk about why this one is NOT a very safe place to keep a book!) ⚠️

My students always play in pairs... #1 to help each other and #2 so more can win!

✅One last hint...I keep the "Marion tokens" in individual, “snack-sized” Ziploc bags, so they’re always ready to go…and quick to pass out.
