Description

I can’t wait for you to use this in your classroom! It brought up so many great, tough conversations about inequalities, race, and how people identify.

I started this challenge with my students at the end of last year because we noticed that majority of the books we were reading were authored by white women or men and many of the main characters didn’t reflect who was apart of our class and who we saw as we walked Boston’s streets. Thus, we (our class) considered ways people might identify and we (the co-teaching team I was on) compiled this board. It started off as a challenge for students to read more diverse books, but ended up opening our eyes more to the world we live in.

We tried our best to use inclusive language and include all people, but I’d love your feedback on language usage and on how this could be adapted for lower elementary.

How it worked:

  • Students would record the book name and author as they were reading.
  • When students complete a book, they would rate it by coloring in the star rating and conference with a teacher.
  • The teacher would then initial the BINGO space the student would like filled.

If you need a place to find great books, I have been adding to this list: Amazon Affiliate Link, but you can also find more examples on my Instagram!
