Description
This U.S. history, math, and place value resource was created to give 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students practice with the concept of reading and writing number words COMBINED with learning interesting facts about twelve (12) of the most influential African-American historical icons of the 19th and 20th centuries: Martin Luther King, Jr., Ruby Bridges, Sojourner Truth, Marcus Garvey, Jesse Owens, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, Sarah E. Goode, Marcus Garvey, Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, and Frederick Douglass.
How It Works: Task cards are read for the purpose of identifying, reading, and recording years (digits) as number words. For example, 1929, the year of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birth, would be recorded and written as “nineteen twenty-nine.” For the first set of task cards (#1-12), students must look at the year (underlined) and record it as NUMBER WORDS. For the second set of task cards (#13-24), students read the underlined number words and record them as DIGITS. Lesson extension printables are then completed for more practice with the concept of reading and writing number words.

*REMINDER: There are three (3) task card answer recording sheets included with this resource. The first two answering recording sheets are to be used with task cards #1-12 and the third answer recording sheet is to be used with task cards #13-24. A student cover and extension printable completion tracker are also included. Feel free to use these resources in any way that benefits the academic needs and levels of your kiddos.
*The concept extension printables were created with the intention of being completed in conjunction with the task cards. However, depending on the needs and academic levels of your kiddos, you may wish to have your kiddos complete these printables outside of the task card activities.
*Images of the Black History Trailblazers found on the concept extension printables may be colored using crayons or colored pencils.
*For your convenience, answer keys for all task card activities and concept extension printables are included with this resource.
2nd Grade Teachers:
Most of the “Black History Trailblazer” activity printables contain specific vocabulary words and phrases that may be too difficult for some of your 2nd grade kiddos to read and decode.
Tip #1: Model good reading by reading the informational blurbs about each Black History Trailblazer out loud. After a few readings, you may wish to have your students practice reading this text independently or with a reading buddy. :)
Tips #2 and #3: Have your 2nd grade kiddos read the first 12 task cards in order to successfully complete the “When Was I Born?” activity. You may also want to keep a list of number words handy for their immediate access and availability.
