Description

Are you looking for an exciting Black History Month skit or readers theater play that connects with students using pop culture, has a variety of roles for all students, and teaches history in an engaging way? Then this script is it!

This short play explores a child's dream where he/she is visited by Letitia Woods, historian and the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in history at Harvard University. Using her knowledge and books about heroes from the past, she explains how their accomplishments resulted from teamwork and support from their communities and were not the result of a one-woman or one-man show.

This play works well for a Black History Month skit for an assembly or classroom read aloud. With a fun and easy-to-use script, you, your cast, and your audience are in for an awesome time!

When the theater stops, the learning doesn't!

This resource now includes multiple-choice and short-response comprehension questions with the answer key. As students rehearse and read through the play, check their comprehension with the questions provided!

The 7 characters in this play include:

Child - 11-year-old student who does not want to work with his/her classmate to complete a history project

Classmate - 11-year-old student who is eager to work together for the history project

Letitia Woods - educator, historian, and the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in history at Harvard University

Presentations from "book" characters about:

  • Rosa Parks - civil rights activist whose arrest led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott in Massachusetts
  • Henry Brown - first African American to escape slavery by mailing himself in a box and later became a magician
  • Jackie Robinson - the most influential African American to play Major League Baseball and civil rights activist
  • Frederick Douglass - important abolitionist of the 1800s who wrote an autobiography that helped expose the injustices of slavery.

This play, titled "Black History Heroes: Not Alone," includes:

- a table of contents

- character dialogue

- tips and ideas on how to use the script

- a simple map of stage directions for understanding the characters' blocking

- and a full character list with brief descriptions of each Black hero's notable successes

- 10 multiple-choice and 10 short-response comprehension questions with the answer key

The run time for this production is ten to fifteen minutes and is a one-act play.
