Description

This Black History Month biography unit will introduce your students to 12 influential African Americans throughout different times in American history. This unit is designed to maximize student success since every article is offered in three levels of text and vocabulary complexity. The differentiation is done for you!

This is the perfect way to introduce your students to the contributions that African Americans have made in the areas of science, literature, politics, art, entertainment, education and so much more!

This resource includes biographies for each of the following 12 people:
Rosa Parks
Jackie Robinson
Barack Obama
Harriet Tubman
Ruby Bridges
Fredrick Douglass
Thurgood Marshall
Muhammad Ali
Ella Fitzgerald
Simone Biles
Booker T. Washington
George Washington Carver

Each of the 12 sections includes the same biography written on 3 different reading levels, 1 page of text dependent questions (perfect for class discussion and/or writing prompts) and 1 for students to complete independantly (using evidence from the article to support their answers).

Students can be given their individual reading levels for morning work, homework or as a center. Use a challenging text in a small group or with your class for a shared reading or close reading experience! This is a great way to increase exposure to rigorous texts!
