A Brief Introduction to Black History Slideshow
The 28-page slideshow goes through slavery to the Civil Rights Movement. Using important content vocabulary, students learn about patterns of life for African-Americans in this country.
A second, separate slideshow for just vocabulary is also included.
Famous African-Americans Who Am I?
This interactive, digital, and self-checking activity is an engaging way for students to check their knowledge about twelve influential African-Americans. Students read and listen to poems about each person and guess whom the poem is referring to. If they're right, they see a screen telling them so! If they're wrong, they try again.

Our Black History self-checking clip cards provide hands-on practice for identifying influential African-Americans. They can be used as a review or for centers with minimal prep!
Students read short poems about each person and try to guess who it is by clipping a clothespin onto the correct name. Then, they flip over the card to see if they're correct!

These puzzles provide a fun and interesting way to practice challenging vocabulary words!
2 Sets of Vocabulary Matching Cards
Students match vocabulary words to their definition and a picture. One set includes vocabulary words related to slavery and the Underground Railroad. The second contains words related to Civil Rights.
Class Newspapers
Each edition of the newspaper series covers a different topic relating to Black History. In addition to a strong social studies focus, each one includes reading comprehension questions and foundational math and language arts practice/review.
In addition to the print version, there is also a digital resource is a collection of close reading articles with a focus on Black History. Their journey begins with a study of four African countries. These introduce students to basic geography and cultural diversity within the countries presented. Subsequent articles discuss significant events and famous African-Americans.
Comprehension questions are included and require students to practice vocabulary and identify text features.

This scavenger hunt gives students a fun way to either learn about a few influential African-Americans OR a great way to test their knowledge after learning about them. Students walk around with an answer sheet and try to identify each person based on their picture and important details about him/her.
