Description
Get students out of their desks and collaborating with this primary source-based gallery activity that challenges students to differentiate Black Codes and Jim Crow Laws. This lesson will allow students to better understand the failures of Reconstruction and the state laws future civil rights movements fought to overturn.

-Mini-Lesson PowerPoint on Black Codes, Jim Crow, and Plessy v. Ferguson.
-Student Note and Gallery Walk Activity Sheet (Both Word and Google Doc versions)
-10 Primary Source Excerpts of Jim Crow/Black Codes for Gallery Walk - Each excerpt is taken directly or derived from various state constitutions. Each is formatted to be placed around the room in gallery walk fashion.
-Formative Assessment Google Form - I've included a link to a Google Form to give quick feedback on class performance.
**UPDATE** - Reconstruction Amendment Extension Activity - Students review the Black Codes from the gallery walk to determine which Reconstruction Amendment is being violated.

This activity fits well in U.S. History, Civics, or African-American History classes. It works well with a variety of ages spanning from 8th Grade to AP U.S. History students.
I typically use this successfully in my classroom in tandem with my "Choose Your Own Failure: Reconstruction WebQuest" which allows students to understand the tragedies of this era. Students typically gain a strong understanding of the short and long-term failures of Reconstruction.
