Description
This food analysis hands-on (or Google Slides) activity will get the kids up and moving around during this lab investigation. It will capture garner the attention of not only your kinesthetic or hands-on learners, but also your lower performing students and intentional non-learners (INLs) as they attempt to deduce who the suspect is that killed the victim. The experiment can provide an interesting source of discussion about each of the suspects, which can spark lively discussions over the macromolecules. The students will first do an investigation to see what a positive test will look like for each of the different macromolecules. The specific compounds tested for are glucose, starch, lipids, and proteins. They will put this information into a data table so that when they test for those same macromolecules in the stomach contents of the victim they can compare the results to see what the victim's last meal consisted of. After the students determine who the suspect is, they will have several questions to answer about the four macromolecules. Doing this activity will ensure that your students become experts with the biomolecules, and enjoy themselves while learning about them!
Activity will take almost 90 min to finish. It is easy to split into 2- 45 minute days by doing the positive macromolecule tests first, and then completing the stomach content investigation on the 2nd day.
