Description

This resource focuses on the biological concepts of immune system function, the evolution of antibiotic resistance in a population of bacteria, and the process of designing a controlled experiment,

ACTIVITY 1 – GRAPHING ANTIBIOTIC EFFECTIVENESS 2 pages. Describes growing bacteria in a culture and sampling that culture to measure population growth. Students graph data and answer related questions.

ACTIVITY 2 – READING and WRITING ABOUT MRSA 1 page An introduction to Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA infections. Students answer questions describing ways that doctors can help prevent developing resistant bacteria and how patients infected with resistant bacteria can be treated.

ACTIVITY 3 – DESIGNING AN EXPERIMENT TO STUDY STREPTOCOCCUS 1 page Students analyze an experimental set-up to determine the effectiveness of a new antibiotic in fighting the bacteria that causes strep throat. Reviews experimental design, writing a hypothesis, describing the control, and reporting results.
