This is a 75-page packet that has truly been a blessing to my students and myself. It was absolutely through the Holy Spirit that I was able to create this, and I have had incredible results in my own classroom.
In this packet, your students will be using the Bible to complete the work. The packet includes art, poetry, and music. What you'll be asking your students to do will be to actually use their Bibles and apply it to their own lives.
Although I use this with my 8th graders, it is perfect for 6th grade all the way through high school. It's great for homeschoolers as well.It is designed for CATHOLIC AND CHRISTIAN classrooms. You can also use this with adults in Bible- Study sessions.
I actually created this project to coincide with my 8th grader's production of the Living Stations. Those of you who do this know what a tremendous amount of work it is. Lots and lots and lots of practicing! I am the Language Arts teacher. I work with the religion teacher to stage this production. We practice during our 8th grade ILA and Religion periods. That's a lot of time out of the classroom and in the church.
And as you know, you are not working with each and every student at the same time while practicing. We have the students working on these packets in their downtime. This eliminates any fooling around. But the overall goal is to get them to begin seeing the Bible as a tool for their lives….to search their hearts. Seeing them in the church working on this is a powerful thing. Though they may complain at first, when they evaluate (in the final page) the work they were asked to do, we always have almost 100% approval. Approval from teenagers? Now that is a miracle!!!!
However, it can also be easily done in the classroom at any time. I think it's great during Lent, but since it's the Bible….it's always relevant during any season! The 75 pages are divided into five sections. You can do this as a DO NOW and have the students work on their packets during an allotted time in class each day….with a designated end due date. I LOVE having the kids complete the work in the church. It's so powerful that way. But you need not do this; although, consider it. It makes it really powerful!
I specifically did not include an answer key. This packet is NOT intended to be a question and answer session.It is not a religion worksheet, though it covers A LOT of what's in the Bible. It really is practical application. It will have your students using the Bible and applying what they read to their own lives and current situations. For this reason, I suggest that you complete one on your own. I consider it a sacrifice to do so; yet, I am always blessed by doing it.
My partner and I grade it easily. We go through the packets to make sure they are complete and done to the best of the students' abilities. We make sure the overall effort is there. If you try to grade it by correcting each and every answer, you will drive yourself crazy!
It is not meant for that. You may want to generate a simple rubric using categories such as : completed done, overall effort etc.
You do not have to be the religion teacher in school to do this! As I mentioned, I teach Language Arts. It's important for our students to see us all incorporating our faith into our classrooms. They cannot see religion as one folder on the desktop of their lives! This will have your students reading, writing, illustrating, thinking. That applies to all subjects!
There are many ways for you to use this in your classroom, and it can be done at any time of the year. It's perfect for down-time. Awesome to leave if you have a substitute. Whenever it is used, your students will be blessed.
I hope you have as much success with this as I do. It really had me searching my own heart. The work and responses the students give back always makes me feel great….because I know that as they did this, they were truly having a conversation with Jesus.
