Description

These play mats are designed for the activity “Bears on a Boat” (popular in many High Scope Resources) In this activity, children place bear counters on a block “boat” as they narrate a play scenario. You can use any type of counters—dinosaurs, farm animals, people, pets, etc. based on child interest!  The play mats give children a concrete visual to use as they pretend.

Teachers encourage children to count how many bears are on the boat (or off the boat). This is also a great way to practice simple addition and subtraction as bears get on and off the boat! Bears on a Boat is also a great way to practice prepositional words, verbs, sentence structure and other vocabulary for Dual Language Learners and kids who may have speech goals. Children can work independently or with a partner to practice social skills like turn taking and collaborative pretend play.

**I would recommend laminating the play mats so that the block boat glides easily across the mat.

What is included:

-Printable 8.5’ x 11” Play Mat

-Activity description with example questions to scaffold learning, and additional activity variations for learners of all levels.

When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
Describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional detail.
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
