Description

The first account of the banjo appearing in North America comes from a 1687 manuscript describing slaves in Jamaica. Students will read 3 different primary sources to answer 8 comprehension questions. This item contains the articles only; the questions are included as part of the slideshow called The Banjo and its Relationship to Slavery. Students will focus on when and why slaves played music, each author's opinions of that music, and how the slave masters responded to the music the slaves were making. The life of a slave is described in detail and students will summarize slave music making from 400 years ago.
