What educators are saying

This was a fantastic resource to provide additional practice for my students work through balancing equations - loved using it!
My students needed extra support and practice in balancing equations. I love how there were many different worksheets which made it easy to differentiate to meet all of my learner's needs. Students were able to complete these as independent work during our math block.

Description

Balancing Equations - Equivalent Number Sentence Activities

For students to effectively progress from arithmetic to algebraic thinking, they must understand equivalence. Unfortunately, there are many students who do not understand the meaning of the equal sign and thereby experience problems interpreting, modifying, and answering equations, specifically those that incorporate multiple numerical terms. Equivalence activities can also be used to develop student's relational thinking.

Students will use their problem-solving skills to answer equations involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Students are asked to view each number sentence. The goal of the activity will be to write the correct missing number in each box to make both sides of the equation balanced.

*Updated to Version 2 in January 2020. Now includes new design and 1 additional level*

Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 × 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700 ÷ 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division.
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 × ? = 48, 5 = __ ÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ?.
