Description

iLearn Science Jr. will help you kick off your year of science fun! Since the original for older students was so popular, I decided to create a version for 2nd and 3rd grade students.

A suggested teaching schedule breaks the resource into 17 days of activities. You'll be set for several weeks of science!

This file includes:

• 38 slide PowerPoint with information about safety and tools

• Safety activity

• Ten tools practice activities (8 hands-on, 2 based on discussion and notebooking)

• Fun investigation to practice new skills with science tools

• Written assessment

• Recording sheets for each activity (2 per page for most), as well as 6 different choices of recording booklets for the investigation so you can accommodate your students' needs

Materials Needed

Hand Lens: hand lenses, leaves or flowers

Balance: pan balances or bucket balances, gram weights or small blocks (for non-standard measurement option), rocks

Comparing Mass: pan or bucket balances, 5-10 objects (I recommend school supplies)

Thermometer: thermometers, cups, pitcher

Beaker: plastic beakers (different sizes are fine), trays, food coloring (optional)

Stopwatch: balls (any type or size), stopwatches

Ruler: leaves, centimeter rulers (or blocks for non-standard measurement option)

Measuring Length: centimeter rulers, the great outdoors or items in your classroom

Grow Toy Investigation: grow toys (one per pair or team), plastic cups, beakers, rulers, balances, weights, stopwatches, hand lenses, thermometers (optional)

Note from the resource about Grow Toys--

Grow toys begin tiny, then grow significantly when they are given a chance to absorb water. Within a couple of hours, you should notice a big change! You can find them on Amazon or at the grocery store, Dollar Tree, Hobby Lobby, or Target dollar bin.

Types and prices vary, but I have seen them priced anywhere from $1 for a pack of 15 Grow Capsules to $3 for 7 Dynamite Dinos. Some of the polymer toys have a plastic feel. Some are sponges in plastic capsules like in the Grow Capsules brand. I prefer the polymers for this activity, but the sponge is just as effective for observing and using tools. Teachers Love It!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We used this resource as a way to introduce procedures, materials and an overall introduction into science. It was engaging, fun and interactive. It is easy to adjust for any grade level between 3rd-5th grade. Highly recommend. - Esmerelda U.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was able to use this during a few tutorial sessions. Students were struggling with a lot of the measurements before, and now they have the ability to describe them in detail when asked. Thanks for a great product! - April K.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ As a first-year teacher in charge of teaching 3rd-5th science, this product is a godsend for someone fresh out of college who was given (maybe) a week's worth of instruction on teaching science. None of my practicums and student teaching experiences included science instruction, so, at the very least, your products have been an anchor for me in a year full of ups and downs with outdated curriculum and budget-cuts. I cannot thank you enough for making a difference in your beautiful, thorough, standards-aligned, engaging products. - Sarah P.
